Maus I
While I was reading Maus I, I noticed Vladik's relationship with all of the other characters in the novel. One that was really puzzling was his relationship with Mala. If they don't get along why are they together? i eventually came to realize that for Mala it was about the money. But that still leaves Vladik, he really has no reason whatsoever to be in the marriage he is in with her. Personally, I found his realtionship with Lucia was sort of comical. It reminded me of like a high school crush or something where she didn't want to leave him and she thought it was the end of the world. Vladik's relationship with Artie seemed to grow throughout the novel. At the beginning they didn't seem to be very close. Vladik even says it has been two years since they saw each other last. Once Vladik starts telling Artie his story, Artie is very intrigued and eager to come back more often to hear it. At the very end of the novel Artie considers his father a murderer and I believe that their relationship is not going to go anywhere anymore and it will be just like it was before. I love Vladik and Anja's relationship. It reminds me of that perfect marriage that everyone wants, except not during the Holocaust. He would do anything for Anja and you can truely tell that he is in love with her and that nothing can separate them, even what they are going through during the book.

I also agree with the Vladik and Mala relationship. If you do not get along, why would you be together. Mala was def. in it for the money. However, i think Vladik married Mala to fill the empty space left by Anja. I think that he just married Mala because she was like his "rebound." Anja and Vladik, i agree, had that perfect relationship. Their relationship is the one everybody wants to have. Vladik and Artie's relationship is def at a standstill. I agree with you when you say its not going anywhere. When you have someone as stubborn as Vladik it is extremely hard to have a good, solid relationship with them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about Mala and Vladik. They really have no reason to be together. All Vladik does is make harsh comments towards her throughout the story. Mala definitely has to be with him for the money because she hates him and is always pressuring him about his will. I also agree that Vladik and Anja had the perfect relationship. They loved each other so much despite everything that happened to them throughout the novel.
ReplyDeleteLike everyone else is saying, I agree with how you felt about the relationship between Mala and Vladik. He is always putting her down to Artie, about the hangers, or her " nervousness" and such. I feel that his relationship with Mala is something to cover up the pain. He might have missed the company of another person. Especially since his relationship with Artie wasn't very good either. Mala marrying for money I do agree with, and when it comes to Vladik it could be for some kind of support, even if it's not emotional.
ReplyDeleteArtie and Vladik's relationship did change throughout the novel but at the end I wonder what happened after? The end with him leaving saying "murder" shows that he still has anger towards his father.
Haha alright 4th time hearing this but completely agree with the Vladik and Mala relationship. I feel like he just doesn't want to be alone while he is older. Although Mala is no Anja (go anja!) she is still going to be there, whether her intentions are good or not. I feel like Vladik definately is not the same since Anja's passing. You can see this in his relationship with Artie. It affected him so negatively, that he takes it out on people close to him. The thing is that Vladik cannot even realize what he's doing. I really liked your response!
